Looking ahead

Looking far ahead is a critical habit. If you see an obstacle or hazard too late, you can’t react. That’s why you look as far ahead as possible, to buy time to react.

Don't focus on obstacles too long, or just react to the track or trail right in front of the bike. This robs you of reaction time. Riders who don't look far enough ahead don’t have enough time to respond to the terrain.

Instead, look far ahead. Then you can blend sections together more smoothly, and choose better lines, so you can go faster.

Look at the next obstacle as early as possible. This may be the beginning of a rut, the entrance of a corner, a big bump on a straight, or the take off of a jump.

Look at the best line, not the bad line.

As in shooting or baseball or football, look at the target, not somewhere else. The entry to every obstacle has one perfect line. This is your target.

Focus on it as soon as it is in view. Then when you approach, look for your next target.
