Making Skills Habit

Riders need to know what and how to practice to ride better, with more control. Control, good habits and balance lead to skill development. You need to master the fundamental skills.

Skills must be studied, and practiced precisely, to become habit. Only by making these skills habits can you become a safer, skilled rider.

To be a competent rider or racer, your skills must be second nature. This frees your concentration to set up for the next obstacle.

When your skills become reflexes, you are free to scan ahead. Otherwise you are distracted by thinking what to do next, instead of just doing it. Being distracted at speed on a dirt bike is unsafe.

To gain skills, practice them slowly and correctly until they feel natural. If you don't form good habits, you will dangerous.

A new technique takes countless repetition to become habit. You must acquire all the skills, and make them reflex, before you can ride near 100%.

Practice skills at half speed, until you can do them every time without thinking. Buy riding techniques books and videos. Use video recording to review your new skills and be sure they are correct. Have a friend watch you to be sure you are executing the skills correctly.
