So I went down to Battery Park with some friends on Saturday to race the SETRA hare scramble opener on Sunday. They entered just ahead of me. When I pulled up to pay, she asked for $40 for the gate fee. "For 2 of us? Its $20 per person?" She replied "No, it's $10 per day, per person, so $40". Ok, I paid her and went in to start unloading. I found my friends and they told me they'd just been kicked out of the park. They had 3 of them in the truck and were charged $60 gate fee and he questioned it, as well. He simply asked if that was right and was told the same thing I was told. He paid the $60 and went in. Apparently questioning the landowners daughter (the young girl working the gate) is a big no no and gets you kicked out. Ashley, the landowner, rode up on his four wheeler, said go get your money back and get off the property for being rude to his daughter?!? We both literally just asked if that was right!! I went on SETRA site to ask there, but couldn't find the forum/comment section and the contact questions page had some spam/malware comments about Viagra, porn, and dog/pet problems. LOL Did anybody else have issues with this or was it a fluke misunderstanding about how gate fees are supposed to work? I've never been charged extra for coming in the day before an event before this time. Does SETRA set any guidelines against this sort of thing or are the clubs/landowners allowed to do this if they choose?

SETRA only sets the race rules.

Can’t imagine why attendance is low with stories like these though. Gotta treat your customers better than that.

Exactly. No matter what the outcome, Battery Park will never get another dime from me. Even if it's a misunderstanding about the fees, the way he handled it was ridiculous. No questions about what happened. No trying to explain the fees. Just a quick call/text from his daughter and instant guilty verdict. SETRA has lost touch with its customers. If somebody doesn't figure that out and do something quick, SETRA won't exist. Hard to blame it on the economy anymore when the other two series' had almost 1000 racers attend races on the same day, both within a half days drive from there.

Is this about the gate fee or the actions of a promoter? . . . . which if you weren't there to personally hear the conversation is hard to criticize.

While SETRA may pay the ultimate price please don't associate the sanctioning body with something a promoter does.

There were races on Saturday - Peewee, Mini-XC and a non-SETRA race the promoter was doing on his own. Maybe the thought was a gate fee for each racing day? But yeah, $10 per day seems high. Some FTR clubs charge $20 HS gate (but I think that's for a weekend). There was quite a stir when they started that.

Have you checked what it takes to drive through a GNCC gate? ::shocked::

Maybe SETRA needs to set some ground rules for the venues it chooses but please don't blame SETRA for the actions of a promoter.

Best,
- c bob

There are a lot of people that I couldn't be sure of what really happened, but these people are the nicest people you'll ever meet. You probably know them. He and his 2 sons have been racing for a long time. There's no doubt in my mind that what they said is exactly what happened. Had it been anybody else, I would not have driven another 4 hours to go somewhere else after driving 3 to get there. And we came in around 2:30 pm on Saturday. All races should've been over for the day. And yes, GNCC fee is a lot higher, but if you come in on Thursday, the gate fee is still only a one time fee, not for multiple days. I still think it was a misunderstanding about the fees in this case, but misunderstanding or not, the way it was handled made it very clear what he thinks of his customers. I hate that SETRA needs to babysit its promoters down to such a micro-managing thing, but it does reflect on SETRA. I will still attend select SETRA events, but they've over complicated the series to the point it's about shut them down.

It was a SETRA event so SETRA is associated with it, (Reflection). And to compare SETRA to GNCC, is like comparing America to Europe! ::rollieyes::

SETRA had 81 total. Maybe Battery Park kicked out the rest. :D

This is really unfortunate, that race is usually really fun.

Yeah. $20. period. No surprises. No differences from location to location.

This isn't new. Maybe they should address it instead of just asking to not be blamed.

That's some piddley-poo. $10 per day, per person for a local race and after 2:30pm to boot! ::mad::

I'll keep this in mind when planning my race schedule for next year.

414 Racers at SORCS Sunday. ::applause:: Not including quads, because well......they're quads. ::rotf::

Strongly disagree. I’ve known Big Krash long enough to take his word as golden. ::up::

Isn't the owner Ashly Brewer? As many Hare Scrambles as he's raced he should know better. (If it is Ashly.)

Yes, he's the owner. Never had any issues with him before now.

Ashley Brewer is a great guy and put on a great race. I was there when he got the call about one of you being very rude and pushy about the gate fees to the little girl working(not his daughter). Should have taken it up with him and not out on her. He has employees to pay equipment to run and his property wasn't free. So $10 really ain't that bad! With all of the riding areas disappearing we should all try to support him not blast him on the internet and say you will never visit Battery Park again.

First of all, it was his daughter. My buddy's son was in the truck and knows her. Second, nobody was rude to anyone. Not even in the slightest. We simply asked to clarify the fees were right. That's it. If we were pee-pee, we wouldn't have paid and went in. We asked twice to be sure we were all on the same page. Nothing rude BY EITHER SIDE. The girls didn't sound 100% sure about the fees, but were polite. That's why we were so shocked as to what happened. And as for taking it up with him, it wasn't even a big enough deal for us to do that. It was really not an issue. Had he come and asked what happened, then we would've asked him personally about it, but he simply said go get your money back and get out. End of "discussion". I can understand your point, but you only know his side. You don't know us or what was said other than what you heard from Ashley. We spent an extra $100 in fuel to drive to the other race on top of the hundreds we already spend to go to every race, so $10 wasn't the issue. We simply wanted to make sure we were being charged the correct amount. And with all the riding areas shutting down, maybe he should have enough respect for his customers to not treat them like dirt until he gets the whole story. No worries, though, hopefully his buddies like you will keep him open. As for me, he'll never get another dime from me. ::up::
