I have a Navigator and on our last trip to St Louis I was pleasured with a clicking noise for 2 hours before I pulled over and tore apart the side panels near the 3rd seat in the back. I found a small white box that was making the noise. I unplugged it and the noise stopped. I haven't noticed that anything has stopped working....I pulled it out today to find that its an AC Door Actuator aux unit.......What does this thing do? As far as I am concerned all it does is make noise....

Here is an example of it.... http://cpwstore.carpartswholesale.com/c ... 04202.html

I think it blends hot and cold air.

The actuators control all the air flap movements. Some control the air temp blend flap, some control vent position flaps, etc. They are small electric motors with plastic gears. There are a number of brands of cars that those can do exactly what yours is doing. It may be as basic as a simple part replacement but some systems have them "daisy chained" together and have to be programmed as to which position it is installed. You may start setting climate control fault codes with it unplugged.

That particular one should control the vents in the back. Probably why u havent noticed anything diffrent since u are up front. U would probably notice something diffrent if u were sitting it the back. :D

Yep your right, I don't spend much time back there. I went ahead and found one online for $35. At least its cheap and easy to change....

I have seen a few times on Ford products that the blend door actuators just momentarily goes out of limits also, but most of the time, it needs replaceing. You can do a self test on the control head with the motor plugged back up and see if it corrects itself. If I remember correctly, the sequence to do a self test is....

Press "off" and "floor" at the same time, then press defrost within 2 seconds of doing that. Then you should see it making digital circles where the temprature is usually displayed. It will then give you a code where the temp is displayed, if everything is OK, it should say 888 with all the icons displayed. Then press the blue (colder) button to exit self test mode safely.
