Power
This bike has a nice power spread for an open bike without any BIG hits and puts out very little vibration for a ring-ding of it's size
Suspension
It's suspension was voted second overall in the 85 Dirt Bike openclass shootout and I must agree, even with the trashing these items had recieved before me, a little oil had them working well up to par for a 15 year old bike.
Brakes
Decent to good, The rear pads seem to wear very well and have decent grip for a drum brake. The front, however, I must disagree with the article, they have very good stopping power it could however have to do with the non-stock lever/master cyl. I had to use because mine was missing but it's a decent disk stopper anyways.
Comments
For about $190 I have gotten a decent Openclasser dug out from a pile of junk, If you find one of these in very good to excelent condition you could do worse then buying one (the YZ490 comes to mind) Parts are difficult to come by however so be for warned. If it needs only a top end job, it is really a cheap thing to do to the bike considering because a Yamaha yz490 piston from either Yamaha or Wiseco or.. etc. is a drop in replacement. and the cylinders are cheaply boreable. This bike is not a bike for motocrossing and could be a handfull in the woods (I'll see soon) with the raked out steering. One last thing, the shifting is very vague the Dirtbike compared it to a 1973 Bultaco... but I wouldn't know as never having ridden one of them :)
