First year for KIPS power valve on any production open class bike. Also first year for the rear disk. Some owners had problems with frame/rim fractures.

Power
I never though i would here myself say this but this bike has more power than GOD. Off idle torq is simply wrong. Could pull my truck out of the mud. Midrange that makes you need to change your undies and not in a bad way. More power in the mid than any thumper ever dreamed of. Whoever said the CRF450R is the best motocross bike ever just dont know. Enough on top to outrun anybody. Not the revviest motor in the world but you try spinning a piston that big 10,000 RPM. Lol And if it isnt fast enough gear it and shift it WILL pull. SERVICE NOTE: 90% of all kawasaki,s never run correctly because most people do not know how to properly setup their KIPS valve. See your local dealer for a service manual and tech tips related to this subject.
Ergonomics
Love the way this bike stands. everything about this bike screames all powerfull. Feels like your going fast just sitting on it. Ive had to do a LOT of work to mine but after about $2000 worth of trick goodies you couldnt touch this thing on a thumper and i dont care how hard you try.
Suspension, Front
Cushy. I put a set of canisters off of a 1993 on mide and would recomend this mod. All you would have to do is change the triple tree. Very compliant and just loves going stupidly big. Picks up the low speed nasties with athoraty and can keep the rocket on track at warp speeds. But i warn ya HOLD ON.
Suspension, Rear
Works surprisingly well for its age. Good and cushy but ya better revalve the shock. The stock oil is horrible. Keeps the rear end biting into the soil aggressivly. Also keeps the bike stable at speeds but turns very well. Likes to air it out and thats "all bad"
Brakes
First year of disks and they do a good job. The single piston calipers are not the greatest but they do the job intended well enough.
Comments
The baddest of the bad. Would make a thumper cry. Thinks it has wings and really has a thing for not keeping the frount tire on the ground.

Crazy low to mid range grunt. Top end faded. It was a stump puller. I could holeshot starting in 3rd all the way to first corner.
Ergonomics
Worked for me. I put on hi bend bars for my preference.
Suspension, Front
Soft. Revalved front and rear and it was good.
Suspension, Rear
Soft. Revalved front and rear and it was good. Horrible oil in the shock from the factory.
Brakes
Not as firm or predictable as honda's but way better then drums.
Comments
I owned this bike back in 86 and sold it in 90 so this review is based on memory. I loved the bike back then but by todays standards...its prolly a bull to ride.
I gave it a 100 score based on bikes in 86. The kx beat out the cr in the magazines back then btw.

Power
Strong bottom, with a hard hitting mid-range. Top end fades away fast with a light vibration.
Suspension
Forks, in stock mode, to stiff!
Some buck's and a little adjustment time. A perfect pair!!

Shock, Stock mode, way to stiff! Required cash and adjustment. Better, not perfect!
Brakes
Front disk, worker's great! Easy two finger operation.

1st year Rear Disk, It worked.
That's about it!
Comments
Got the cash. Buy a better bike!
If not, you'll still have fun, eating up 250cc bike's on the straights!
