BIG BANG for the buck!!!!!!!!!! (Score:1)
Power
Mine is modded fairly well.PC2 pipe;304 silencer and an FMF turbine core II s/a; Boyesen Rad Valve; air box mod; NoToil filter;XR400 front springs; stock gearing(13/47).
Having typed all of that,MY bike has no problem rolling on 4th gear wheelies and w/traction,I have pulled it on up hitting 5th.
I have been riding since about 7 years old and am now 48.This bike still can scare a man.
Ergonomics
I am 5'8"and 165lbs.I may just be used to the layout BUT everything feels about right.
Suspension, Front
EXCELLENT for a 1997 KDX.Be sure that you get it sprung for your riding weight and the difference between stock and my added XR400 springs is night and day.
The forks will soak up the meanest NE Alabama trails at high speed as designed by the dope growers on their 4 wheel drive atv's.That is making a strong statement too if you have never ridden on dope grower trails.
Suspension, Rear
Keep the fluid changed, keep an eye on the bladder(on all older bikes I reckon)and keep the bearings greased and replaced when needed and the rear does a fine, fine job.
Brakes
Better than good and the front will endo a man if you do it right.
Comments
Buy as many as you can and keep'em all. 2 strokes are making that big ol' comeback.Besides, the KDX can be transformed into a very competitive mount as the add ons are limitless.
I ride my bikes all year long and the KDX is great in 10 degree weather and 97 degree weather.
THIS IS TRULY A GROW INTO BIKE(meaning you need to add the mods as you grow into this bike while still keeping it stock and NOT boring it) that is fun as hell and can and will do it all at 1/3 the price of those ktm's and that includes buying it and maintaining it. I'd rather keep my money than smoke it up on orange stuff.TOO many ride orunge colored bikes and half of them can't ride.they look flashy though.

*** I HIGHLY suggest putting as much armor as possible on the KDX so you can really ride it.To include: water pump guard; pipe guard; brush guards on handle bars; radiator guards;skid plate; disk guards; update the headlight/number plate w/an aftermarket unit for a bit better and brighter night riding; and use 6 ply knobby tires as well as thick tubes and RIDE MAN RIDE.Those 5 inch alabama thorns ain't nothing now.***

a couple of comments ago someone said it would beat a xr250 but it all depends on the bike condition. i own a 1999mod xr250 and it drags off the kdx

Really good, excellent for off-road and easily more than enough for on road, leave an XR 250 in the dust
Suspension
front is a bit soft but can be dramatically improved when the dampening is adjusted
Brakes
front is perfect will stop you very effectly, back is satisfactory not perfect but good enough

being 190lb. and still wheelying? 2nd gear says plenty of user friendly power.
Suspension
still 190, and good for starters, as i get better could see some firming up.
Brakes
love the front, rear is on/off
Comments
people told me i needed more bike but @190lb.,havin not ridden in twenty years, since i was a kid, this thing flies. will have the jetting cleaned up by a local shop but has a nice not too violent hit. suspension is on the soft side, great for beginners like me. as my skill level rises, may be the only mod needed.
