Power
good low end power but not much at top. you can change pipe and reeds and get a bit more.
Suspension
suspension is actually decent when adjusted properly. forks springs are heavy enough but for anybody more than 180 pounds they will want a stiffer rear spring.
Brakes
decent for drums, front is a dual action type and can be adjusted to work very good.
Comments
1st production water cooled 250 from yamaha. rare because the handlebar mounted radiator only lasted for 1 year on this model (81 and 82 for the 125). i love my bike and its a good conversation piece. i bought it 4 years ago from e bay and have been restoring it ever since. it was a basket and needed everything. its about 90% now and is looking and running very good.

Power
Not too bad in the power department if you get all 5 gears. Mine needs a rebuild I believe! Like has already been said it's a brute at 240 lbs and only a 250!
Suspension
Not bad on the 70-80 ft. jumps, takes the corners not so bad, if front too soft you can add up to 12lbs of air to compensate.
Brakes
Yes the brakes do suck compared to the new bikes for sure!! But the bike is 22 years old!
Comments
Good bike if just getting back into MX but needs to be updated definately!!!

Power
tons of low, but mid is not that great
top end is excellent.
mine is bored 40 over and when you hit the power band in the top end, you can't keep the front end down
Suspension
front is soft, but works fine for trails or small jumps
rear is not too bad considering the bike has a horizontal shock and its 22 years old
Brakes
front barely stop
rear locks up almost instantly
bike is a bit slow to slow down
Comments
Its not the fastest bike, but its great for going on trails and great up hills

Power
bottom was good the mid range to top end was nasty. terrible throttle response.
Suspension
soft.front was soft and the back was soft but ok for how the shock was mounted on the swing arm.
Brakes
terrible(drum brakes) when they r wet, might as well not use them.
Comments
my old yz250 was not in verry good condition so that is why my reviews werent perfect. im sure if you have a clean bike it will do just fine. it is VERRY hard to find parts for this bike so be patient. i think d.p. makes pipes for this year and model but i am not sure.

This bike has good low and top end. the mid is not horrable but compared to a new yz it sucks.

I am a tubby rider and i can take the bums and jump no problems... never bottomed out yet...
Brakes
rear sucks really bad. (ok not that bad for the style of break) I fixed the front and it is works good
Comments
