Legacy review (Score:1)
Power
The '79 KX80 had a low end to midrange power band.
And I'm talking Monster low end. The bike was very fast and more user friendly than the YZ. It had a five speed transmission. I remember servicing the air filter was a total pain.
Ergonomics
My review will be based on the bikes performance in 1979. Such as, how did it compare to its competitors of the day. This was the first year of the KX80. It felt much bigger and bulkier than the YZ or the RM. It felt somewhat top heavy compared to the YZ80 but, still handled well. I owned and raced both of these bikes in the summer of '79.
Suspension, Front
The forks were way too soft out of the crate and needed heavier oil.
Suspension, Rear
the rear shocks were adjustible for stiffness only. The bike handled large jumps well (remember I'm talking 1979 standards) but, could get pretty squirrley over small ripples.
Brakes
Very good for a drums.
Comments
Great first attempt by Kawasaki at a mini. To restate for the record 1979 was the first year for the KX80. It was designated KX80A1. Half way through the summer of '79 I switched to a YZ80 and my lap times improved dramaticaly.
